We offer the following services:

Expertise

Accelerator control systems

With over 30 years in the accelerator community, we provide support for all aspects of accelerator control. Our capabilities in this area include:

Project engineering expertise in timing, instrumentation, fast orbit feedback, low level RF, magnet integration, and all ancillary systems. We provide EPICS driver and application development, user interface development, control system integration with customer equipment, motion control systems, and PLC-based protection systems

Beamline control systems

We have people who have successfully delivered the beamline control systems for NSLS-II, Diamond Light Source and the Australian Synchrotron. Our capabilities in this area include:

  • EPICS application design and development
  • EPICS driver development
  • User interface development
  • Control system integration with customer equipment
  • Motion control system specification, development and commissioning
  • PLC-based protection systems

Accelerator physics applications

Our team has successfully delivered the online model for NSLS-II and FRIB. Online models allow the development of new physics applications during the design and construction phases of a project. This approach was developed at the Diamond Light Source and deployed at NSLS II and FRIB. Our capabilities in this area include:

  • Model development, language conversion, performance evaluation and optimization for multi-particle and single particle tracking.
  • Extendable architecture to easily add beam line elements
  • Deployment of Channel Finder Service to map optical device names (physics names) to EPICS Process Variables
  • Integration of the model into the EPICS database to provide an online model

EPICS 7 and EPICS V3

We have deep experience in the architecture and code in both EPICS V3 and EPICS 7. We have successfully developed and deliver EPICS V3 base and training to a significant percentage of the community. We have been active in the design and development of EPICS 7 from its inception over 10 years ago.

We can provide services in the following areas:

  • Architecture of EPICS V3 and EPICS 7
  • Application and development in both EPICS V3 and EPICS 7
  • Training in the use of EPICS V3 and EPICS 7

Control System Studio

Our people have been instrumental in the development of Control System Studio framework, tools, and related middle layer services. We provide training of the installation and use of the CS Studio environment and support the continued improvements required in CS Studio to expand capabilities and integrate new services with general and custom widgets. Please contact us if you want to explore CS Studio and the middle layer services that provide an integrated operator environment. System Studio framework and tools. We can implement new applications within CSS, provide training in the use of CSS and develop systems for your application.

High-performance systems include FPGA applications

We have experience at NSLS-II, FRIB, and LCLS-II with reviewing, designing, implementing, and commissioning high-performance systems including Timing, Fast Machine Protection, and Fast Orbit Feedback.

We have experience developing FPGA applications for:

  • Architecture for global low latency, high throughput systems
  • Drivers to integrate high performance systems
  • Applications to manage timing, limits, and fault data
  • FPGA Implementation of timing and fast protection

Grounding (earthing) systems

Mike Thuot was instrumental in resolving noise issues at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) that were impacting commissioning. He was instrumental in significant grounding savings at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) by reviewing and refining their grounding plans. Mike has also reviewed grounding issues at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC).

Feedback systems

We have supported the development and commissioning of 10 kHz orbit feedback to achieve sub micron resolution at the NSLS II. Professor William Levine has authored many books on control theory and over 30 years of practical experience working in a variety of industries to solve automation issues.

We can provide services in the following areas:

  • System characterization
  • Feedback system design
  • Feedback system commissioning
  • Feedback system tuning

Project planning for design, budget and staffing

Our team has successfully planned and delivered many projects based on the DoE Earned Value Management System (EVMS). These projects span over 30 years and include: Ground Test Accelerator, Low Energy Demonstrator, Spallation Neutron Source, LCLS 1 (planning support only), and the National Synchrotron Light Source II. We have sat on EVMS Review committees and provided consulting support for planning and execution.

Our skills in this area include:

  • Developing Work Breakdown Structure
  • Developing the WBS dictionary, budget, and schedule
  • Identifying risk and risk planning
  • Creating staffing plans
  • Creating design and prototyping plans
  • Incorporating best available solutions in the community
  • Establishing project standards
  • Value engineering
  • Variance reporting and recovery planning
